Malware Blocker: Malware is an umbrella term for all types of malicious program that can harm a computer such as viruses, worms, spyware and adware. Whenever your computer is connected to the Internet, there is a chance it will encounter malware as it receives data from other computers. While antivirus programs are designed primarily to detect malware after it has infected a computer, it can also be beneficial to prevent malware from getting onto your computer by using firewall software and building safe Internet habits.
Run Windows Firewall while on the Internet. Windows Firewall is a malware blocking program that is available for Windows XP computers and is bundled with Windows Vista and Windows 7. Firewall programs are designed to block data connections that may contain malware. To run Windows Firewall, click “Start,” “Control Panel,” “Security Center,” “Firewall” and “Turn on Now,” if it is not already marked as “On.”
Run a fully-updated antivirus program while using the Internet. Antivirus programs are meant to detect and remove malware after it is on your computer, but many antivirus programs also contain features that help prevent and block malware, such as malicious internet link scanners or their own built-in firewalls. If you don’t have an antivirus program, download the most current version of a free antivirus program such as AVG Free, Avast, or Avira AntiVir, open the install or setup .exe file to install the software and then restart your computer.
Run a secondary firewall program whenever you use the Internet. While Windows Firewall can provide a basic level of protection, a fully-functional, third-party firewall program, such as Zone Alarm or McAfee Personal Firewall, will provide additional malware blocking capability.
